William Felty

SDVC Board-Student Veteran Representative & Co-Champion of Veterans Empowered, Successful, and Thriving Action Group (VEST)

William Felty, CADC II, BS, served in the Marine Corps for four years on active duty as a Motor Transportation Mechanic as well as Quick Reaction Force Security Detail after graduating high school in his home state of Tennessee in 2003. During his enlistment, he contributed to the U.S. Military efforts in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom by being stationed in Okinawa, Japan with the 3rd MEF Headquarters Group, 7th Communications Battalion from 2004-2005 and deploying to Iraq with Combat Logistics Regiment 15 from 2006-2007. After his deployment, he returned to Camp Pendleton, California with the 3rd Marine Logistics Group, 1st Maintenance Battalion and finished up his service at which time he had many social and psychological struggles. For his service and commitment, William received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 2007.

As a Marine Corps Veteran, William has worked and attended college completing a Certificate in Alcohol and Other Drug Studies, an Associate’s Degree in Behavioral Sciences, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Science of Psychology. William has been certified as a Substance Abuse Professional in California since 2011 and worked for Aurora Behavioral Healthcare for 5 years. He drew on his Behavioral Health Hospital work along with his own recovery experience when he created Refined Transitions in January of 2015. At Refined Transitions, he works primarily with young people and their family members, who struggle with substance abuse and addiction, to help them find recovery.

William embodies what it means to serve by committing numerous hours of volunteer work while operating his business and maintaining his personal life. William believes that in order to get good you have to give good so he serves his community through volunteering with others, collaborating with partners, and being available to support others. Currently, he serves with the San Diego Veterans Coalition Board as the Student Veteran Representative, the SDVC-VEST as the Co-Champion, and the SDVC-VEST Student Veteran Mentorship Program as the Mentor Coordinator. Also, he serves with the San Diego Military and Family Collaborative-Community Prevention and Safety Alliance as the Steering Committee Chair. In addition, he serves with the Circle of HEROES as the Steering Committee Chair and as the Chief of Operations. In the past year, William has volunteered numerous hours to various groups and organizations such as: Boys To Men Mentoring Network, the American Red Cross, the Uptown Community Services Center, Care House Life Ministries, the ManKind Project, The Mission Continues, Alliant’s Student Veteran Organization, SD Hiking, and the California Veterans Legal Task Force.

In his personal life, William is engaged to be wed to Vyanh Vo, who works in the Biotech Industry of San Diego in Clinical Research Trial Management. He and his fiancé reside in northern San Diego, and together they enjoy hiking and backpacking with their pet dog, Missy. He takes the opportunities he has to connect with other service members, both past and present, and educate others about military culture and the issues that service members face. He works toward a brighter future for his community and yours.
